The type of oral surgery you have will ultimately determine how much discomfort you feel, but rest assured our goal is always to provide the most comfortable dental care we can. For most of the oral surgery procedures we perform, over-the-counter pain relievers will take care of any discomfort. If needed, your dentist can prescribe something stronger to help you through the healing process.
To prepare for your oral surgery, it’s important to avoid smoking for at least 12 hours before the procedure and for 24 hours after. Most oral surgeries are done using only local anesthesia, which means you can have a light meal several hours before the procedure. We’ll give you detailed instructions on how to prepare. Depending on the type of surgery you receive, it’s recommended that you take at least one or two days off from work or school to rest and recover.
Before the extraction, your dentist will numb the area around the tooth with local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable and won’t feel any pain during the procedure. They may gently rock the tooth back and forth to loosen it before carefully removing it. You might feel some pressure, but you shouldn’t experience any pain. If the tooth is impacted or requires a surgical extraction, your dentist may need to make a small incision to access and remove the tooth. Afterward, they will provide you with aftercare instructions to promote healing.
